A Short Guide for Getting a Student Visa to Canada

Canada offers high-quality education, numerous opportunities, and vibrant culture; it’s no surprise that it’s a destination for many international students. More than 130,000 international students go to Canada to study in premier universities every year.

So is it difficult to get a student visa or a Canadian student permit so you can study in Canada? Figuring that out will help you smooth out the process and secure a permit. Here are the basic steps you need to do when getting a student visa to Canada:

1. Receive an Acceptance Letter

If you’re still unsure where you want to study in Canada, you should settle that first before beginning your student visa application process. The first step to getting a student visa is by applying for a Canadian university of your choice.

When the university sends you an acceptance letter, you can proceed with the application. This letter is essential in your visa application.

2. Apply for a Canadian Student Visa

Once you receive your acceptance letter from your chosen university, here are the next steps you can do:

  • Apply for a Canadian student visa on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s website.
  • Send your visa application online or by mail.
  • Provide an acceptance letter from a university recognized by the Canadian government.
  • Deliver proof of financial resources deemed sufficient enough to support your studies in Canada. It should cover your tuition fees and living expenses, among other necessities.
  • Present proof confirming you have no criminal record.
  • Submit clinical records of your good health and complete medical examinations if required.

Your student permit generally expires 90 days after your studies conclude. You may use the remaining time to stay and travel around Canada, or you can apply for a work permit instead. The latter allows you to take a full-time job in the country.

3. Prepare All Necessary Documents for a Student Visa

Here are the documents you need to prepare:

  • Filled-out student permit application form
  • Letter of acceptance from a university
  • Your passport or travel document
  • Two recent passport-size photographs, with name and date of birth written on the back
  • Proof of financial support, usually between 10,000 to 11,000 CAD per year of staying in Canada
  • A letter of intent
  • Proof of payment for the study permit fee, which is at 150 CAD

4. Language Requirements for Studying in Canada

Proof of English language skills isn’t generally included in the requirements for a Canadian student visa. However, if you don’t come from an English-speaking country, Canadian universities will require you to submit proof of English language proficiency.

5. Wait to Receive Your Canadian Study Permit

Once you have sent your application for a Canadian study permit, you must allow up to 90 days for its processing. Still, some applicants may receive their study permit earlier than that allotted time, depending on the situation in your country.

Conclusion

Getting your Canadian student permit involves many steps, but no application is too hard without the right preparation. It’s better to have all the information and needed requirements laid out before you begin, so you know what to do every step of the way and not get lost among complicated procedures.
