What You Should Know About the PGP in 2021: Our Guide

The recent wave of COVID-19 lockdowns across Canada has made it significantly more difficult for citizenship and visa applicants to secure their chances of being accepted.

Although Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has worked double-time to ensure that all applicants are assessed quickly, the restrictions are still more present than ever before. Recently, however, the government has been able to pick up some much-needed steam to cut down processing times on applications by investing in new solutions and rolling out effective measures.

In the case of applicants for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), matters have become tense because of slow processing experiences caused by COVID-19 restrictions.

If you’ve applied for or helped a family member apply for a permanent residency or citizenship through this scheme, then your plans were most likely delayed after not being selected for the lottery process. Thankfully, things seem like they’re about to let up this year because the Canadian government is set to accept thrice as many applications for the PGP in 2021.

A hopeful development

With its sights set on welcoming even more immigrants over the next two years, the government—together with the IRCC—is intent on accepting up to three times as many applications this year. This goal has manifested itself in the form of the Parents and Grandparents Super Visa, which is expected to allow for even more family members to migrate to Canada.

According to the IRCC’s website, parents and grandparents have something to look forward to with their migration efforts this year because of the retweaked program and an increased acceptance threshold. Recent updates from the Canadian immigration department solidified these hopes, with Canadian Immigration News stating:

“For the 2021 program, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will conduct a new interest to sponsor form intake process and accept a maximum of 30,000 new applications.”

With the 2021 PGP soon to be implemented, it’s vital that applying parents and grandparents keep an eye on future developments as more information and timelines will be made available in the coming weeks.

What makes the 2021 program special

Compared to the 2021 PGP and Super Visa, the 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program made it difficult for hopeful applicants to secure their chances of acceptance because of limiting conditions.

Under the 2020 program, far fewer applicants had the opportunity to migrate because of the Coronavirus pandemic, which caused it to be pushed back to the start of 2021. Unfortunately, to make matters worse, Canadian immigration officials set the limit for acceptance rates to a rather disappointing 10,000 new applicants that were chosen through the use of a raffle system. With the new updates for the 2021 iteration of the program set to bring forth valuable improvements to the application process, hopeful sponsors and foreign nationals have a higher chance of attaining a chance to move!

How do you qualify as a sponsor?

Considering that the higher limits for the PGP (and its Super Visa counterpart) provide a much greater likelihood of success, it’s best to assume that there’s no better time to apply than in the coming months. If you wish to sponsor a parent or grandparent under the 2021 program, here are the following criteria that you’ll need to meet:

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must live in Canada
  • You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or be a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • You must have enough money to support the people you want to sponsor

Conclusion

While 2020 was undoubtedly a difficult year for applicants wanting to immigrate to Canada, parents and grandparents who were unable to make the move last year and early this year now have better chances. With the help of the soon-to-be-implemented amendments to the Parents and Grandparents Program, you can expect to have your loved ones join you in the near future! Suppose you want to learn more about how to effectively go about the application process and guarantee the eligibility of a parent or grandparent. In that case, you can always depend on reliable immigration services in Toronto to help you.
