If studying in Canada is something that you’ve always wanted to do, then we’ve got just the thing for you. Read on for our beginner’s guide to applying for a student visa in Canada!
Eligibility and Requirements
Before we talk about the requirements, we first have to discuss who can qualify for a Canadian study permit. Here are the requirements for eligibility:
- You must be enrolled at a designated learning institution.
- You must prove that you are able to cover your tuition fees, living costs, and return travel.
- You must have no criminal record.
- You must be in good health and must complete a medical exam asked to do so.
- You must prove that you will leave Canada after you complete your studies.
For those of you who are eligible, you must then gather all the necessary documents to make the application process go more smoothly. Most applicants will need to provide evidence of a passport and proof of sufficient funds. Providing proof of funds is commonplace in applying for a student visa and is a requirement in most countries.
These come in the form of bank statements, payments of accommodation or tuition fees, or documentation establishing that you will be under a scholarship. Aside from these requirements, you may also be required to submit biometric information such as a photograph and your fingerprints.
The application process is rather easy as it can be completed online through Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration website. You may also apply offline if it is impossible for you to apply via the internet. For those of you who will be applying online, do note that you will need to create an account on the website and provide scanned images of your documents.
You will need to pay a fee for your Canadian student permit. The price will vary but expect it to be upwards of $150 (CAD). If biometrics are required, you will also need to pay an additional $85.
For international students from China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Senegal, Morrocco, Antigua, Barbuda, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, Trinidad or Tobago, your application will be processed much faster due to the Student Direct Stream.
If you are accepted, you will receive a letter of introduction and a temporary residence visa. You will need to present these at the border along with your valid passport. You must also bring along the essential documents that you submitted with your application, as these too will be checked.
We hope the information that we’ve provided above proves to be helpful in aiding you to secure a student visa. While getting a student visa is rather accessible, you’ll still want to make sure that you do everything right as falling short during the application process can easily foil your chances of studying in a Canadian university.
