Canada Opens New Pathways to Become a Canadian Citizen

Some people travel abroad to have a different experience and view of the new surroundings, while others travel to find better life opportunities. Although some only want to work abroad for higher compensation, some really desire citizenship because they fell in love with the country because it provides more opportunities in their career.

Indeed, Canada is one of the best countries for immigrants. Aside from the country’s beauty, it is known for its friendly government that embraces and values foreign workers. Recently, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that the Canadian government has opened new pathways for foreign residents to become permanent residents.

Who is qualified?

Generally, the new immigration programs are open for international graduate students, temporary health and essential workers, and French speakers. If you fall under these categories, these might be your best way to immigrate to Canada. In fact, the CIC started accepting applications last May 6 for the following slots:

  • 20,000 slots for temporary workers in the health sector
  • 30,000 slots for temporary workers in selected essential sectors
  • 40,000 slots for International students
  • Another 3 streams for French speakers with unlimited slots

The 20,000 slots for the health sector are distributed to 40 healthcare-related occupations. Workers in this sector need at least a year of experience in the said profession or another pre-approved occupation that is considered essential. Meanwhile, 95 jobs in the fields of caregiving, food production, distribution, and more will fill the 30,000 slots for selected essential occupations. On the other hand, international students are expected to have completed a Canadian post-secondary program in the period between January 2017 and the present.

Regardless of the sector, everyone must meet the basic qualifications for admission and be proficient in at least one of the Canadian native languages. They must also be authorized to work or be working in Canada at the time of their application and live in one of the provinces in Canada other than Quebec.

Canada was aiming to accept over 400,000 immigrants in 2021, and the new programs are helpful in filling in the reduced immigrants for the past year due to the pandemic.

What is Canada’s reason for the new programs?

Canada has been making alternative efforts in reaching its target number of immigrants for 2021. They already conducted express entry draws to the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) eligibles or those already nominated in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). From 5,000 candidates in January 2015, they gathered over 27,000 candidates in February. The candidates are those already residing in Canada and are not hindered by travel restrictions. Besides that, the government also opened doors for Canadian refugees to appreciate their contributions as front liners amidst the pandemic.

But why is there suddenly an easier way to enter the country? Canada believes that the more immigrants they accept, the faster the economy will recover. In addition, Canada is experiencing demographic challenges caused by the ageing population and low fertility rates. As such, the ageing population outnumbers the population of the younger generation. Baby boomers are almost retiring within this decade, and the country needs more support for its labour force. Aside from that, the elderly will soon need more care and attention, and the lack of younger residents means that there might not be adequate care for the ageing population.

Conclusion

Canada is indeed one of the most immigrant-friendly countries. Aside from supporting the future of workers and students, they value their contributions to the country. If you have plans of immigrating to Canada as a student or worker, now is the time to grab the opportunity as Canada is opening more doors soon. Make sure you only talk to authorized immigration consultants in Toronto, as they will help you secure your entry to the country.
