Canadian Immigration: What You Need to Look Out for in 2021

2020 was indeed a year of unexpected twists and turns. Because of the pandemic, many had to change their lifestyle, stay indoors, and put their dreams to a halt. However, with the vaccine rolling out and more countries lowering their COVID-19 cases, the future seems much brighter — the same holds true for Canada.

If you had dreams of moving to Canada, 2021 might be your year. But before you get the ball rolling on your application, there are a few things you need to watch out for in the following months.

Canada’s immigration systems constantly change. This year is no exception even if Canada’s travel restrictions are a bit heavy now due to the new variants — the Canadian Government still has massive plans for the country.

Ideally, you want to speak to immigration consultants in Toronto if you’re planning to make that big move, so you’re updated with what’s going on in their travel and immigration systems.

So, if you’re thinking of finally booking that ticket and starting a new life in Canada, here are some things you need to watch out for this:

1. Lifting of Travel Restrictions

By September, the Canadian Government has stated that everyone in Canada who wants to be vaccinated will be vaccinated. With that being said, there is a high potential of relaxing existing travel restrictions, which. have been quite tight since March 2020. Basically, non-essential travel is expected to return to some degree of normalcy at some point.

Once the travel restrictions are lifted in Canada, couples who were separated due to the pandemic will finally find relief, and those who have Confirmation of Permanent Residence or COPR document will finally be able to move to Canada after more than a year of waiting patiently.

2. Federal Election

Right now, Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has some wind in his sails as weak challengers are up against him in the next federal election. With that, Trudeau could turn his minority government into a majority, making it easier for him to fulfill his plan.

And since the Government has a target to allow more than 400,000 new permanent residents in 2021, which is one of the highest in over a century, the number is expected to rise in the following years. With that being said, the flow of temporary residents will increase, and students and temporary work permit holders.

Should Trudeau lose the race, Conservatives could reset the course of Canadian immigration.

3. French Ability for Express Entry

Late last year, the Canadian Government acknowledged and rewarded additional points to Express Entry candidates who have French ability. Thus, those who wish to apply for Express Entry should start brushing up their French skills to up their ranks in the Comprehensive Ranking System.

4. Citizenship Fee Has Potential to be Waived

With the Liberal Party growing since 2019, the Government has promised to eliminate the Canadian citizenship fee, which currently totals CAD$630 for adults and CAD$100 for minors. Although it has taken much time, a 2020 IRCC report on the citizenship program has given hope to would-be Canadian citizens who can’t pay citizenship fees.

Speaking to an immigration consultant in Toronto to keep you posted on the latest news regarding Canadian immigration will help you plan your big move, helping you be more aware of the existing fees and what could potentially be waived in the future.

The Bottom Line: Things Are Looking Brighter For Canadian Immigration In 2021

2020 was a rollercoaster ride of changes, and since you’ve put a pause in your dreams, you’d be happy to know that it’s possible for you to pack your bags this year and move to Canada.
