Child Immigration Sponsorship in Canada – What to Know

Every year, thousands of people immigrate to Canada either for work or to reunite with their family members. Today, this process is more accessible to interested individuals, as the Canadian government is becoming more welcoming and accepting of immigrants.

Those interested can register themselves as Canadian citizens or permanent residents as long as they are eligible and have followed the requirements and guidelines of the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can apply their below-22, foreign-born, dependent child, whether biological or adopted, to become a Canadian citizen or permanent resident as well.

Here is a general guide on sponsoring child immigration in the country to give you a clearer idea:

Requirements To Sponsor

Sponsoring child immigration as a Canadian citizen or permanent resident is not much of a hassle, as long as you follow the process and fit the requirements.

Canadian citizens can register their foreign-born dependent child to become a citizen as well, even if they are outside the country at the time of the processing. This is acceptable as long as they prove that they will return to Canada when their dependent child has been approved for immigration. However, permanent residents must be residing in the country to make them eligible for the sponsorship.

Here are a few of the key requirements or criteria a sponsor should meet:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be willing to sign a 10-year undertaking promising to provide for the financial needs of their child once approved
  • Be able to prove that they have sufficient funds to support their sponsored foreign-born child for ten years or until the child reaches the age of 25

Requirements To Qualify as a Dependent Child

The Canadian government does not have many strict requirements for sponsored children. To qualify for the application, one must meet the CIC classification.

The CIC defines a dependent child as someone who is:

  • Under the age of 22
  • A biological child (adopted children undergo a different process)
  • Unmarried or not in a common-law relationship
  • Have a physical or mental condition that prevents them from financially supporting themselves (for children above 22 years old)
  • Must not be inadmissible

As mentioned, Canada may deny applications of sponsored children who are inadmissible. However, some conditions or instances allow them to immigrate, such as if the child requires costly medical treatment. With that said, you should consult with an immigration expert to assist with your application.

Dependent Children Who Can Be Sponsored

According to the IRCC, a foreign-born sponsored child does not pertain to only biological children. They accept non-biological children’s applications as long as they follow the right procedure and fall under these categories:

  • Foreign-born children born to Canadians and Canadian citizens not born abroad: may automatically be registered as Canadian citizens upon applying for a Canadian citizenship certificate
  • Children adopted outside or will be adopted upon coming to Canada: can be registered as Canadian citizens or permanent residence as long as legal requirements from the foreign country and Canada were strictly followed
  • An orphaned child of a close relative: can be registered as a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, given that their parent was a sibling, grandchild, or nephew or niece of the Canadian sponsor

Conclusion

Sponsoring an immigrant child in Canada is not hard as long as you and your sponsored child meet the requirements and follow the right processes. What’s great about Canadian child immigration sponsorship is that it allows foreign-born, adopted, and close-relative orphaned children to be sponsored for immigration. To best assure yourself that your application will go smoothly and successfully, it would be best for you to ask for assistance with an immigration agency.
