Here are some paths to choose from to extend your stay in Canada:
As a Worker
After receiving your final grades, you have 90 days to apply for a post-graduation work visa. You can work with a Canadian immigration agency to make the process run smoothly.
After completing an 8-month certificate, diploma, or degree, you can apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) that allows you to stay in Canada and work full-time.
You don’t need a job offer to apply, and you can work in any occupation anywhere in Canada—even if it’s unrelated to your studies. Only positions at danger of exploitation or jobs that require a medical exam are exempt, with examples being teaching or working in health care.
As a Visitor
You must apply for a visitor record if your study permit is about to expire and you’re looking to remain in Canada temporarily. To convert your immigration status to a guest, you can apply online or on paper within 90 days of the program’s conclusion.
You must make any new application for a study permit or work permit outside Canada once you switch to a visitor record. Doing so is possible at the Canadian Consulates in Los Angeles (study permits only), New York (work permits only), or a visa office that services your country of citizenship (for both study or work permits).
Should you switch to a visitor record, you will not be able to apply for a post-graduation work permit.
As a Resident
You are not a permanent resident (PR) or a Canadian citizen as a student in Canada. You might want to immigrate to Canada after you finish your studies and then become a citizen.
You must apply for permanent resident status to become a citizen, which involves the following:
- You can apply to become a permanent resident.
- You will continue to be a citizen of your nation.
- You can be a Canadian citizen after completing the immigration process.
Suppose you have completed your studies and gained employment in Canada. In that case, you can apply for consideration for the Express Entry program, which allows the government to select a pool of individuals to become permanent citizens.
You can live outside of Canada once you become a permanent resident. You must, however, spend at least two years in Canada throughout five years.
