Canada is a great place to pursue your studies. It consistently ranks as one of the best countries in the world for education. Finishing any degree of schooling in Canada will earn you an internationally recognized degree or certificate. And Canada welcomes international students with open arms.
Now, if, for whatever reason, your study permit were to expire or no longer be valid, these are three things you need to do to extend your study permit in Canada.
Sometimes, whether due to scheduling or performance, you might end up finishing your studies either earlier or later than expected. If you finish earlier, your study permit expires on whichever date comes first: the date marked on the permit or 90 days after you have completed your studies.
The 90 days begin on the date you receive the first notification (e.g., email, letter, transcript, etc.) from your school that you completed the program or 90 days after your complete your studies. You will have the rest of this time to figure out how to continue studying in Canada.
If you finish later than expected, be sure to apply for an extension of your study permit at least 30 days before its original expiry date. If it expires before you can extend your permit, you can always apply for a new one and restore your status as a temporary resident in Canada.
2. Proof of Funds
To extend your stay, you must prove that you have the means or the financial support to keep studying in the country. You will need at least CAD10,000 for yourself. If you have a spouse or a partner, you will need an additional CAD4,000, and finally, if you have children or any other dependents, you will need an additional CAD3,000.
It’s vital to show immigration you can support yourself, and if it applies, your family should you continue to stay in the country.
3. Student Status
If your study permit expires before you have a chance to reapply, you will lose your status as a student. Another situation that can cause this is changing the conditions of your permit without processing it (e.g., your designated learning institution (DLI), type, location, or time period of study).
But even so, you still have a chance to continue living in Canada and restore your status as a student to continue your studies. However, while you are taking care of your affairs, you cannot study without your restored status and a new study permit.
Other important notes to remember:
- Ensure that your passport does not expire at the same time as your permit, or else you won’t be able to file for an extension.
- As long as you continue to meet your requirements and honour the conditions of your stay, you will be able to apply to restore your status as a student.
Applying to extend your study permit should not be too difficult if you are a good student and manage to lock in all your requirements. The process for extension is a lot simpler than applying for it from your home country. With ample time, planning, and help from an immigration expert, you should be able to get your extension swiftly and with no problems.
