Family Sponsorship: How Do You Move to Canada?

There’s no denying that family sponsorship is the most popular way of immigrating to Canada and gaining permanent residency. As the most welcoming country in the world, Canada offers this program to help families reunite with each other. Family members who are citizens or permanent residents now have various options in sponsoring their spouses, children, or relatives living abroad to become a permanent resident in the country. In fact, the Canadian government believes in keeping families together, which is why it makes the processing of family sponsorship programs a topmost priority.

In this article, we’ll share with you how to move to Canada through family sponsorship:

What to know about family sponsorship programs

The family sponsorship programs allow a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident to sponsor family members and relatives to become permanent residents. With such options, your family members or relatives can live, study, and even work in the country. When the application is approved, the sponsor is financially responsible for the sponsored family members or relatives as soon as they arrive.

Who can be a sponsor?

There are basic requirements you need to meet before becoming a sponsor. Take note of the following:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must be a Canadian citizen, a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, or a permanent resident of Canada.

Family members and relatives who can be sponsored

If you’re wondering who can be sponsored under the family sponsorship programs, below are some of them:

  • Spouse
  • Common-law partner
  • Conjugal partner
  • Dependent children
  • Parents
  • Grandparents
  • Brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons who are orphaned, under 18 years of age, and not married or in a common-law relationship
  • Another relative of any age or relationship but only under specific conditions
  • Accompanying relatives of the above

Vital sponsorship requirements

Apart from the basic eligibility mentioned above, here are other essential requirements you must meet:

  • You must sign a sponsorship agreement with the relative to be sponsored. This agreement commits you to provide financial support for your relative, whenever necessary. However, this agreement also says that your sponsored person becoming a permanent resident must make every effort to support himself or herself.
  • You must provide financial support to your spouse, common-law, or conjugal partner for three years from the time they become a permanent resident.
  • You must provide financial support to your dependent child for ten years or until the child turns 25.

How to apply for a family sponsorship

There are two stages for the application under the family sponsorship program, as follows:

  • You apply to sponsor your family member or relative.
  • Your family member must apply for permanent residence.

To get started, you must get the application package, fill out the required forms, and obtain all the necessary documents. Also, be sure that your family member or relative accurately fills out the forms and provides the required paperwork. After that, the next step is to pay for the application fees, including the biometric fees and third-party fees. Then, you can submit your application via mail!

Conclusion

The family sponsorship application process can get confusing at times, which is where an immigration agency can help you. But while you’re at it, be sure to consider all the valuable information discussed above so that you are well informed. If you need guidance and assistance, work with an immigration consultant who can guide you every step of the way.
