Family Ties: Bringing Your Parents or Grandparents Into Canada

Many people consider their grandparents as an integral part of their growth. Whether their parents were busy or were visiting for the weekend, grandma and grandpa have always made it a point to show love and affection. When individuals with such close ties to their grandparents move to Canada, they’ll likely experience profound sadness. Although they’ll be pursuing better opportunities in a different country, it also means leaving their grandparents behind.

Fortunately, Canada is intent on unifying families. It makes this process as easy as possible to provide a complete experience of what the country can offer. Canada supports a healthy and diverse community that includes various races, cultures, religions, and sexual orientations. This gives everyone the chance to experience the greatness of Canada. When planning to bring your parents or grandparents with you, immigration consultants recommend these steps:

The Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program

Canadian citizens or permanent residents that are 18 years or older and residing within Canada can sponsor parents and grandparents to join them. The sponsored will then receive permanent resident status, allowing them to enjoy all the healthcare benefits and other advantages from the government.

What’s the Income Requirements for Sponsorship?

The income requirement is dependent on the number of sponsors you take into Canada. A sponsor needs to meet the income requirements that last three taxation years before applying for the service.

In 2019, the necessary income for a pair of parents or grandparents was around $41,007, which continues until 2020. The amount of income increases slightly annually, at around the mid-1 percentage point.

What Is the Time Frame for Sponsorship?

Sponsorship takes around 20 to 24 months to process. Immigration consultants advise Canadians and permanent residents to apply for the sponsorship as soon as possible so you can see your beloved relatives quicker.

The Application Procedure

The first step to this is checking sponsorship eligibility. Besides being the appropriate age to sponsor, you’ll have to look at your annual income and compare it to the requirements. Doing this will show you if you are eligible to take them into Canada. The next step is to submit an online interest for sponsorship, complete with all the details. Successful applicants will receive an invite that permits sponsoring parents or grandparents.

The Quicker Solution

For those looking to process things faster through a temporary solution, a Super Visa exists to allow relatives to visit you in Canada for up to two years each time for an entire decade. If you don’t plan on residing in Canada all your life, then this is a great option to beat the homesickness and always have family around you while you work or study.

The requirements for a Super Visa are:

  • Must be parents or grandparents of a citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Must have a letter of approval from you to invite them
  • Must apply from outside of Canada
  • Must be admissible into Canada
  • Must have medical insurance valid for at least a year from entry date that has a coverage of over $100,000
  • You must meet the minimum income requirements
  • They must be subjected to immigration medical examinations

Sponsoring two people requires a minimum income of $32,270 and takes around 212 days to seven months. This does not allow your parents to stay in Canada as permanent residents. Instead, they can live with you for up to two years at a time.

Conclusion

Canada is a beautiful country that treats its people well and places them always in high regard. If you are a resident of Canada and you want your parents or grandparents to live life with you, consider contacting your local immigration consultant to assist with sponsorship.
