How to Immigrate to Canada through the Start-up Visa Program

If you’re already a business owner and you’re planning to expand your horizons abroad, the Start-up Visa Program is the best way to immigrate to Canada. The country’s giant economy is one of its many appealing factors for foreign entrepreneurs, and the program makes the immigration process just a little easier.

The Start-up Visa Program essentially allows foreign nationals to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents, letting them start their own business anywhere in the country. While waiting for your applications to be processed, you are also allowed to aim for a temporary work permit so you can move to Canada and begin putting up your business.

Most immigration consultants would recommend the program to people looking to start a new life in Canada. However, there are some things you must do to qualify for this program.

Obtain a Letter of Support from a Designated Organization

When applying for the Start-up Visa Program, you’ll first need to get a designated organization’s support for your business. These companies are approved business groups that can invest in start-ups through the program.

You must contact the designated organization and ask how you can get their support. Once that’s over, you’ll be presenting a proposal for why they should invest in your business idea. After getting approved, you’ll have your letter of support in hand.

Open a Qualifying Business

To get a letter of support from a designated organization, you’d need a qualifying business. It means that it should be innovative, can create jobs for local Canadian residents, and can compete on a global scale.

If your business idea applies to all three of the requirements, you can be confident that you’ll get a letter of support from one of the designated organizations.

Meet the Standard Language Requirements

Of course, since you’re a foreign resident looking to immigrate to Canada, you’ll need to meet the language requirements. In Canada, being able to communicate in English or French is essential. It helps your business succeed even more.

Applicants for the Start-up Visa Program must take an approved language test, and you’ll need to meet the minimum level of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). The minimum is a five in either English or French in all of the four areas:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening

Have More than Enough Money to Settle

Remember that the Canadian Government doesn’t give financial support for start-up visa immigrants. It’s up to you to meet the minimum amount of funds you need to settle comfortably. The total amount is dependent on the number of people immigrating with you.

If it’s just you moving to Canada, you’ll need at least 13,213 Canadian Dollars. Meanwhile, for two people, you’ll require 16,449 Canadian Dollars. For every additional person past seven, you’ll need to add 3,650 Canadian Dollars more.

Conclusion

The Start-up Visa Program is one of the best programs to apply for if you’re a business owner looking to immigrate to Canada. Once you receive approval,  you’ll obtain permanent residency, and you can apply for citizenship after five years.

From a business perspective, Canada is an excellent place to invest in due to its rich natural resources, its proximity to the United States, and the fantastic quality of life its residents have. Immigration agencies can easily give you any additional information you might require on this program.
