Permanent Residency in Canada From the Philippines – Part 2

Now, we’re on the second part of our post about applying for permanent residency in Canada from the Philippines. To recap, we discussed in our previous post how Filipinos have huge chances of getting a permanent residency in the country, as the Philippines is the top three source country for immigrants in Canada. We also mentioned that Filipinos have several options to choose from when applying for permanent residency in the country.

In the second part of our post, we will discuss these options. What are they?

Federal Economic Class

Canada accepts most immigrants under the economic class category. The largest group within this category is the Federal High Skilled category. However, there are immigration streams to be considered when applying for Canadian permanent residence from the Philippines.

Here are the Federal Economic class programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker
  • Federal Skilled Trades
  • Canada Experience Class

The federal economic class immigration system operates using Express Entry, and many provinces in the country follow the same approach. Express Entry requires candidates to submit a profile, and the candidate will get 60 days to submit a full application.

Under Express Entry, candidates will undergo a point system via the Comprehensive Ranking System that factors age, education, work experience, and language ability. This is very important, and you can increase this if you have a job offer.

Another thing that can boost your score is when you have a provincial nomination, which could likely get you an Invitation to Apply.

When you have accomplished all the necessary documents for Express Entry, you can expect a decision in six months.

Provincial Programs

If you don’t qualify for a federal economic program, the next option is through provincial streams. Here are Canada’s provincial programs:

  • Ontario Immigration
  • Quebec Immigration
  • Alberta Immigration
  • British Columbia Immigration
  • Manitoba Immigration
  • New Brunswick Immigration
  • Newfoundland Immigration
  • Nova Scotia Immigration
  • Saskatchewan Immigration
  • Prince Edward Island Immigration

Keep in mind: each province runs their own immigration programs that target specific demands of local labour markets. So, if you have specific skills, there is likely a provincial stream waiting for you.

Business Immigration Program

If you are an entrepreneur from the Philippines, you can get permanent residency through business immigration programs.

At a federal level, your options are:

  • Self-employed
  • Start-up visa
  • Immigrant Investor Venture Capital (IIVC) pilot program

The start-up visa program targets entrepreneurs and connects them with private sector investors in the country who will help them establish a start-up business. Eligibility requirements for this include qualifying business, commitment certificate and letter of support from a designated entity, sufficient, available, and transferable settlement funds, and proficiency in English or French at minimum Canadian Language Benchmark level 5.

Conclusion
