Career milestones are one thing, but relocating for work is another. Having the opportunity to work abroad is exciting, especially for the youth today. Many young Hongkongers grow to become skilled and talented enough to be recognized by countries like Canada, for example.
The Canadian government recognizes the exemplary potential of the Hong Kong youth, and are opening their doors for young Hongkongers to join their workforce. Not only will they get to take part in Canada’s booming economy, but they will also be given a chance to work abroad and eventually become a permanent resident of the country!
Now, if you’re a young Hongkonger who needs tips from an immigration expert, we’ve compiled a short guide that will discuss the simplest and easiest ways to immigrate to Canada. With this in mind, you’ll discover that the opportunities are a lot closer than you think!
The Passport Requirements
To apply for a special work visa for Canada, one must first officially hold a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) or a British National Overseas (BNO) passport. It’s also important to note that the validity of Canadian work permits spans the duration of three years only—or until your passport expires. Given that, always keep a reminder to renew your passport on time!
The Opportunity of an Open-Work Permit
The “open-work” permits that Canada issues are a sought-after type of work permit. Under specific circumstances and under the new Hong Kong Special Measures, almost any Hongkonger with a diploma or a degree can qualify for it!
This specific open-work permit is unique in its own way, mainly because of its flexibility. When you’re issued an Open-Work Permit, you will be qualified to work in Canada’s thirteen provinces and territories. Additionally, the application process is as fast as two weeks.
The Internal Application Process
Hongkongers who are currently students, workers, or visitors in Canada are open to this opportunity. The initial step is to extend your status first, and submit an application online with the common supporting documents, such as educational transcripts, a copy of HKSAR or BNO passport, Family Information Form (IMM 5707), among others.
However, due to the travel bans brought on by COVID-19, there is a separate process you must take note of. If you’re applying from outside of Canada, you will be required to submit other documents, such as a valid job offer from a Canadian company, in order to obtain a Canadian open-work visa from Hong Kong. Once this is approved with a letter of introduction (LOI), you may travel to Canada, complete your 14-day quarantine, and begin your work!
This may actually be the easiest way to immigrate to Canada!
Get a headstart in exploring the possibilities. As a Hongkonger, your English proficiency is already a plus for the Canadian government, making you a viable candidate for an opportunity like this one. You may apply as a student, as a STEM professional, as a small business owner, or even as a healthcare worker. Canada is opening its doors for Hong Kong students and professionals like you—so grab that opportunity today and advance your career in one of the most sought-after countries to immigrate to!
