What to Know About the Parents and Grandparents Program in 2021

Canada is widely known for its extensive immigration opportunities for youthful dreamers and growing families, making it a welcoming destination where people can experience a higher quality of life. Its rich cultural heritage, undeniable sustainability, economic influence, electric cityscapes, and dedication to preserving natural resources make it a wonderful place to start fresh.

Of course, all these wonders are not limited to the youth and career-forward adults. Canada is iconic for its impressive immigration system, after all, which means the Land of Opportunity extends its offer to parents and grandparents alike through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) lottery.

What is the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?

This program under Canada’s Family Class sponsorship focuses on Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to sponsor their senior parents and grandparents to live with them in Canada permanently. Once the sponsorship is approved, parents and grandparents can receive permanent residence and may, later on, apply for Canadian citizenship.

What are the Requirements to Become Eligible for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?

First and foremost, you will need to either be a Canadian citizen or have permanent residency to sponsor your parents or grandparents. People who are registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act may also be eligible to apply for this program. Other requirements include the following:

  • You must be at least 18-years-old or older;
  • You must be living in Canada;
  • You must go beyond the necessary income level to provide proof that you are financially capable of caring for your senior parents or grandparents;
  • You must sign an undertaking that you will financially support the sponsored for 20 years.

What to Expect from the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2021 and Beyond

The IRRC planned to accept 10,000 applications for the program by the end of 2020, but unfortunately, there have been several delays in immigration applications due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

Now that the new year has rolled in and the economy is on its way to recovering from the COVID-19 outbreak, the IRRC aims to open up the program again and accept up to 30,000 new applications for 2021 using the lottery system again.

The lottery selection system picks random applicants and sends invitations to move forward with their applications, so be sure to check your spam folders regularly so you won’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime chance. Keep in mind that time is of the essence once you receive an invite since you will only have 60 days to complete and finalize your application.

The Bottom Line: Extending Opportunities to Multi-Generational Families Dreaming of Settling Down in Canada

The Parents and Grandparents Program is constantly under the drawing board as the IRRC strives to maintain a fair format. Tripling the invitation for 2021 is only the beginning, and more positive changes are on the horizon.
