What You Need to Know About Obtaining a Canadian Passport

While many people dream of having the biggest homes, the sportiest cars, and the tastiest meals, some people wish to have a powerful passport to travel around the world. If you share the same desire for a powerful passport, Canada offers one of the best options.

You can enjoy many benefits with a Canadian passport. For example, if you plan to continue your studies at a Canadian university, having such a passport lets you enjoy much lower tuition fees. Another benefit is that you can freely enter and leave the country without worrying about losing your PR status!

That being said, you will need to be a Canadian citizen to obtain the passport. Fortunately, there are many opportunities that you can take to get one! If you are interested in getting a Canadian passport, here is what you need to know about becoming a Canadian citizen!

How do I get a Canadian passport?

As we mentioned earlier, the only way you can obtain a valid Canadian passport is to become a Canadian citizen. However, thanks to legislative changes back in 2017, those who have acquired permanent residence status can now take a much easier route to obtain such citizenship.

What are these legislative changes, and what do they mean?

The legislative changes, while affecting many different requirements and processes, mainly revolve around an individual’s status in the country. For example, under previous regulations, if you were in Canada trying to gain PR (Permanent Resident) status, the days before you gained that status will not be counted into getting your citizenship.

This limitation is no longer the case after the changes. Each day you spend in the country will be counted as half-days. For example, if you spent a year without PR status, you can use half of that towards your citizenship.

Another regulation that has been changed is the total days an individual needs to stay in Canada as a PR to be eligible for citizenship. Under the previous requirements, you needed to spend four years within six years as a PR to be eligible. Now, you only need three years over the course of five years.

What are the main benefits of the changes?

The whole idea of the changes to physical presence is that individuals like you will need to spend a lot less time trying to gain PR status to work towards citizenship. Additionally, the time required for eligibility is also much shorter once you do acquire your PR status.

Conclusion

While there are many other changes we have not discussed in this article, know that these changes all work to your favour. This means that your path to gaining a Canadian passport, which is one of the world’s best passports, has become much easier.

However, this does not mean you will not face any trouble getting one. We highly recommend working with immigration specialists to help you identify the best way you can gain citizenship, given your specific situation. That way, the entire application process becomes simpler and smoother, reducing the chances of running into issues and maximizing your chances of successfully acquiring the passport.
