Where Are Canada’s Newest Immigrants From?

Canada is considered one of the best places to immigrate to. It boasts of spectacular views and a growing economy that welcomes immigrants with exciting career and school opportunities. Because of this, many people around the world continuously seek the best way to enter Canada fast and without any hassle.

Before the coronavirus lockdowns started in the country, Canada continued to welcome a huge influx of immigrants. In fact, up until the end of April, it welcomed 74,000 new permanent residents.

What Are the Top Ten Source Countries of Canada’s Newest Immigrants?

The top ten source countries where Canada’s 74,000 newest permanent residents are from during the first four months of the year are India, China, Philippines, USA, Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria, France, Iran, and Brazil.

  • India is the number one leading source country

The data suggests that India, just like the last few years, continued to claim the top spot in being the source country of Canada’s new permanent resident (PR) visa holders. It also accounted for 24 percent of the newest immigrants.

One of the top reasons that many Indians become qualified to be immigrants in Canada is that they are fluent in speaking English. Also, they hold a college degree or university credentials or have professional work experience.

  • The four other leading source countries

More Chinese became permanent residents in Canada earlier this year, accounting for almost 10 percent of new immigrants compared to the recent years of 9 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of Filipinos that immigrated to Canada generally remained almost the same, accounting to 7 percent in the first four months of 2020 as opposed to 8 percent last year.

On the other hand, countries that rounded out the top five of Canada’s leading source countries are the U.S. and Nigeria. Since they have high English-language proficiency, they have a major advantage in Canada’s immigration system.

How Are the Immigrant Source Countries Impacted by COVID-19?

The coronavirus pandemic urged everyone to practice safety precautions, observe social distancing, and most importantly, put a freeze on local and international travels. That created an impact on the source countries of immigrants to Canada during the rest of the year.

While Canada’s immigration minister announced the country’s willingness to welcome more than one million immigrants between 2020 and 2022, this ambitious plan might be postponed or cancelled due to coronavirus-related disruptions.

There are two possibilities that may happen due to the pandemic: the distribution of immigrant source countries might change due to the limited ability of foreigners to head to Canada. On the other hand, there may also be little or no impact at all on the various countries.

Conclusion

Canada welcomes a high number of immigrants all over the world, and some countries stay consistent in being the leading source countries of Canada’s permanent resident cardholders.
