Why Having Canadian Experience Makes Immigration Easier

When you ask a foreign worker about their plan for Canadian immigration, they’ll have a common response: Express Entry through the FSWP (Federal Skilled Worker Program). However, as most express entry immigration consultants will tell you, there’s much more than the FSWP when it comes to Canadian skilled worker immigration.

Besides FSWP, there are also the Provincial Nomination Program (PNP) or the Canada Experience Class (CEC) program. These options may actually be the better route to take, according to StatsCan and the CIC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

Why does having Canadian experience make immigration easier?

The FSWP, PNP, and CEC all have varying strengths towards the same end goal. One out of four foreign skilled workers were able to gain permanent resident status in Canada through the FSWP in 2018. On the other hand, the CEC and PNPs combined placed two-thirds of foreign skilled workers overall into permanent residence.

Economic-class immigration programs have long been dominated by those who have worked in the country as a temporary worker. Nearly 60% of all applicants in 2018 alone have been temporary workers in Canada. This is an important factor to note because the CEC program is limited to those with Canadian work experience. Aside from all that, non-Express Entry streams of Provincial Nomination Programs typically require an applicant to have studied or worked in the province. Take note that it is not optional; it is considered a mandatory requirement.

Furthermore, applicants with Canadian experience find better jobs than their counterparts. This makes the investment of getting a foreign degree from Canada or working in a temporary job in Canada to be quite the smart one.

The two-step strategy is more accessible in Canada because the country offers fast-track work permits for highly skilled workers. Not to mention, the process to permanent residence is trustworthy and predictable, so as you go along it, you are never in doubt.

What can immigrants do?

All this data we’ve talked about points to a workable strategy for immigrants.

First, get Canadian experience. If you can, get a degree from a Canadian university or college. If you don’t want to or if it isn’t doable, then becoming a temporary foreign worker in Canada is your next best shot. There are many programs, such as the Atlantic Pilot program and the community and rural pilot program.

Another tip is to reach out to reputable Express Entry consultants. These people can help you figure out what the best strategy for your particular case is.

Lastly, you must understand that Canadian immigration is not just about FSWP. The CEC or PNP methods can help jumpstart your Canadian immigration

Certain provincial methods of getting into Canada don’t require you to have a job. Just living in Canada will open up your prospects as you are gaining Canadian experience.

Conclusion

Canadian experience is extremely valuable to any Canadian immigrant. Some methods of immigrating are locked behind getting Canadian experience. These methods tend to be better than their counterparts. We hope to see you in Canada soon!
